The Cave of Hira has a significance importance in the history of Islam. The cave is situated at height of 270 m on the mountain, Jabal-e-Noor. The mountain is about 3 Kilometres from Makkah in Hejaz Region of Saudi Arabia. There is nothing on the mountain except some un-grown thorny bushes. The peak of the mountain is also straight and slippery. The Cave of Hira is about 3.7m in length and 1.60m in width.

For spiritual meditation Holy Prophet ﷺ often went to the clam and peaceful environment of Cave of Hira. He would stay there meditating and praying until His food and water supplies would finish. Whenever Holy prophet went to Cave of Hira, He spent his days and nights in worshiping of ALLAH and thinking about the purpose of life and the phenomenon of nature.

First Revelation in Cave of Hira:

In the Holy month of Ramadan, at the age of forty, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received his first revelation from ALLAH through Angel Jibrael (A.S) in Cave of Hira. While the Prophet ﷺ was sitting all alone in the cave, out of the stillness of the night; the Angel Gabriel suddenly appeared and said to him, “Read!”.  “I cannot read”, Muhammad ﷺ replied all shaken. The angel repeated the command, pressing him on, “Read!”. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once again protested, “I cannot read”. “Read” the mighty voice commanded once more. “I cannot read”, the Prophet ﷺ replied.

The angel then squeezed the Prophet ﷺ a third time and said:

“Read in the name of your Lord, who created-

Created man from a clinging substance.

Read, and your Lord is the most Generous-

Who taught by the pen-

Taught man what he did not know”

(Surah 96: verses 1 to 5)

After first revelation Holy Prophet ﷺ went back to His home and shared the incident of the cave with His wife Hazrat Khadija (R.A). Hazrat Aisha (R.A) narrated Hazrat Khadija’s reply to Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ that:

“Nay! But receive the good tidings! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you, for by Allah; you keep good relations with your Kith and kin, speak the truth, help the poor and the destitute, entertain your guests generously and assist those who are stricken with calamities.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Book 60, Hadith 478).

Islam emerged with this revelation in Cave of Hira and all bad norms and ritual started to eliminate from the world. In present era during pilgrimage many people climb the mountain daily to see Cave of Hira. Though it is not a necessary part of pilgrimage but people love to visit the place where our beloved Prophet ﷺ used to worship ALLAH.
