Jabal Thawr (Arabic: جبل ثور) (Mount Bull) is the name of a mountain in Saudi Arabia. it is located in the lower part of Makkah to the south of the district of Misfalah. Height of the mountain is 1,405 m (4,610 ft). It is the second cave after Cave Hira, which has significance importance in the history of Islam. Mount Thawr has many hill and caves. Prophet ﷺ and His companion Abu Bakr (R.A) took shelter in the cave before they took off to Madinah, since the pagans of Makkah were trying to capture them.
In the Cave Thawr:
The Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (R.A) arrived at the cave on Mount Thawr. Abu Bakr (R.A) entered first to clear away anything that might injure the Prophet ﷺ. He found a few holes and stuffed them with pieces of his cloths. As there were still two holes left, he thrust up his feet into them. ALLAH’s Messenger ﷺ then entered and went to sleep on Abu Bakr’s (R.A) lap.
Suddenly, something stung Abu Bakr’s (R.A) foot. But he did not twitch, fearing he would wake the Prophet ﷺ. But the pain was so intense. His tears began to run down his cheeks and onto the Prophet’s ﷺ face. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ woke up and saw that Abu Bakr (R.A) was in pain. He applied His spittle on the injury and the pain disappeared.
Muhammad ﷺ and Abu Bakr (R.A) remained hidden in the cave of Thawr for three consecutive days and nights. Abu Bakr’s son Abdullah (R.A) sneaked to the cave from the city of Makkah at night. He bring the news and word on the street to them. Amir bin Fohayra (R.A), Hazrat Abu Bakr’s salve, had some flock of sheep. He feed the flock on his grassland nearby, and he brought milk for them at nights. Amir drove his goats back to Makkah every morning from the same route to hide the foot prints of Hazrat Abdullah (R.A).
When they were inside Allah (S.W.T) sent a spider to spin a web from a bush across the entrance to the cave. Allah (S.W.T) also commanded two doves to fly down between the spider and the tree, make a nest and lay eggs. So the opening of the cave remains disguised. When Quraysh were about to discover the hiding place of Prophet ﷺ. Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) started to worried about Prophet’s ﷺ safety. Abu Bakr (R.A) said to the Prophet ﷺ:
“If any of them should look under his feet, he would see us.” He said, “O Abu Bakr! What do you think of two (persons) the third of whom is Allah?” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3653)
On seeing the spider’s web and dove nest, the Quraysh concluded that no one could have entered the cave and left.
Describing this scene the Quran mentions in Surah Taubah:
“If ye help not (your leader), (it is no matter): for Allah did indeed help him, when the Unbelievers drove him out: he had no more than one companion; they two were in the cave, and he said to his companion, “Have no fear, for Allah is with us”: then Allah sent down His peace upon him, and strengthened him with forces which ye saw not, and humbled to the depths the word of the Unbelievers. But the word of Allah is exalted to the heights: for Allah is Exalted in might, Wise.” [9:40]
After three days when they learnt that the search by the Quraysh had petered out they left the cave and headed towards Madinah.
